The problem with fire-pits is that it is difficult to build the fire correctly such that air gets *underneath* the fuel.

      So:

Use dry fuel, start with some kind of fire-starter – fatwood works well – laid on newspaper or similar. Build kindling around that in a conical shape, then the wood fuel around that, also in a conical form (like supports for a teepee). Keep the pieces small until the fire is established, Once you get a bed of coals you may use larger pieces. But the key is to get air running through the system as the fire starts.

If you’ve tried proper wood-stacking and lighting methods, it could be that your wood just isn’t fully cured (dried). Firewood dries from the outside to the inside, so you might have wood that lights OK at first, but won’t stay lit.Chances are, the place where you bought the fire pit also sells bagged or bound pinion wood, which is basically designed for fire pits. It’s often chopped and compressed back together (in whatever shape they choose), a lot like particle board. One thing: you do NOT want to use that kind of wood for anything food-related, not even for toasting marshmallows. It’s typically made from scrap wood, which may contain harmful chemicals.
