What is the best way to build a fire pit?

We have a preexisting concrete slab that we would like to turn into a fire pit seating area. We have already decided to go the easy route and stack slabs of stones in a square or circle as apposed to using mortar to bind stones together. We might even just stack bricks or cinder blocks. Our main concern is to not burn the surface of the concrete slab the pit will sit on. Any ideas? I am totally open to any suggestion on how to build a fun economical fire pit for my family to enjoy! Thanks in advance!

What type of ground cover should go around a fire pit?

My husband and I just "down-sized" our bare-bones fire pit in our backyard. It was a 6′ diameter pit, with a circle 2 bricks high as the edge. We brought the sides of the pit in so it is about 3′ in diameter and 4 bricks high, but are now left with 1 1/2′ of dirt around the fire pit. What should we put over this (as a quick fix) so people sitting around the pit aren’t stuck in mud? We’re not ready to do any sort of paving…

Anyone know of a store that carries cement molds?

I am looking for a mold to make curved bricks or pavers to build a round fire pit. Ours is currently square and mismatched…would like to design a cleaner look.
